OBJECTIVE:
Calculating the Mean, Median and Mode by using a simple experiment.
Introduction
There are 3 main measures of central tendency: the mean, the median, and the mode.
MEAN |
The mean of a collection of numbers is their arithmetic average, computed by adding them up and dividing by their number. |
MEDIAN |
The median is the midpoint in a collection of numbers; half the data values are above the median, and half are below. |
MODE |
The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a collection of numbers. |
Let's calculate mean, median and mode in the following experiment.
There are 9 students in Mrs. Green's class.
Mrs. Green wants to know the average or mean time it takes them to divide a deck of 52 cards into 2 equal piles each containing 26 cards, regardless of color or suit. Let us calculate this with her. She will use a stopwatch to time the students.
